Generally, waste is considered hazardous if it or the material or substances it contains are harmful to humans or the environment. Waste with the following characteristics is considered hazardous:
- Explosive
- Flammable Liquids/Solids
- Poisonous
- Toxic
- Ecotoxic
- Infectious Substances
Examples of hazardous waste accepted at the St Kitts SWMC include:
- clinical waste (waste resulting from medical, nursing, dental, pharmaceutical procedures)
- chemicals, eg brake fluid or print toner
- batteries
- pesticides
- hazardous waste containers
