Generally, waste is considered hazardous if it or the material or substances it contains are harmful to humans or the environment.  Waste with the following characteristics is considered hazardous:

• Explosive
• Flammable Liquids/Solids
• Poisonous
• Toxic
• Ecotoxic
• Infectious Substances

Examples of hazardous waste accepted at the St Kitts SWMC include:

• clinical waste (waste resulting from medical, nursing, dental, pharmaceutical  procedures)
• chemicals, eg brake fluid or print toner
• batteries
• pesticides
• hazardous waste containers
